Golden Globes 2013

Lots of things have been written about the best and the worst dressed at the latest Golden Globes awards ceremony. Every year the stars of Hollywood let us dream about wearing all those magnificent and fantastic gowns. As you all know, behind every actress or actor there's a personal stylist who looks for the best dress to help them win the battle to be the 'best dressed'.

After looking all the pictures on several sites and in the leading magazines, in my opinion, the 4 best dressed are:
  1. Kate Hudson, in Alexander McQueen.
  2. Jennifer Lawrence, in Christian Dior.
  3. Jessica Alba, in Oscar de la Renta.
  4. Kerry Washington, in Miu Miu.
Clockwise from top left: Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Alba, Kerry Washington

And what about you? Who do you think are the best 4?

The white shirt

I love white shirts. I love the colour. I love how versatile they are. And you do too, don't you? Having a white shirt in your wardrobe is like having an LBD (little black dress). It's a fashion essential and this is why: Because white, like black, is a neutral and every woman should have something in both this colours.

You can wear a white shirt during the cold winter days under a wool sweater or with a suit, skirt or jeans. In the summer season, an oversized white shirt can even be used as a dress but be careful; you don't want to look like a snowman, especially in the winter. The colour white is attractive and fresh, but wearing an all-white look could make you look wider, and you don’t want that! You can wear white during the day or at night if you upgrade your look by using a statement piece of jewellery and during the winter, avoid wearing an all-white look on a rainy day.

A white shirt should be always be white, so when it starts to look yellow it's time to replace it!

Spring / Summer 2013 Trends: Sneak Peak

What I specially love about every new season is that it unveils new amazing fashion trends and brings freshness and liveliness into our wardrobes. According to the fashion shows of the world famous brands collections, the upcoming spring/ summer 2013 fashion trends bring a variety of stunning pieces and great ideas. From the romance, safaris and sports to femininity, elegance and sexuality, the fashion trends for the upcoming season promise to be bright and sharp, so that everyone is able to find something appealing for their personal style. Let's have a sneak peek at the hottest trends!

RETRO TREND: Vintage style continues to march triumphantly on the catwalks. Retro is again back in fashion and it's reflected trough flirty bra-tops, vintage jeans in the style of 90's and black and white prints. This year fans of this trend can still dive into the amazing style familiar to us from the popular films of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Louis Vuitton, Moschino and Michael Kors homage to the famous look yéyé once embodied by Twiggy, Françoise Hardy or Jane Birkin. Mini skirts, trapeze dresses, graphic tiles and bright colours.

GEOMETRIC TREND: Checks, zigzag and diamond prints, polka dots, stripes and more complex geometric patterns adorn many pieces in most of the designers. They are bold and eye-catching and comes in several colours such as red, yellow, blue, green, black or white. Marc Jacobs collection is literally drenched in colourful stripes of various widths and forms.

Dolce Gabbana, Balmain, Marc Jacobs

RUFFLES TREND: In addition to the geometric prints there's also geometric lines likes ruffles. Gucci brings head to toe sliding dresses that feature ruffles on necks and sleeves. It contrasts with the straight lines of the silhouette for a super sensual effect.

Chloé, Gucci, Givenchy

FLORAL TREND: This trend started last summer and it seems not to have the intention to go out of style. Hibiscus, birds of paradise, palm leaves and tropical landscapes. Specially amazing is the trend of floral printed belted dresses.

Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant, Kenzo

SMOKING TREND: An interested innovation of the upcoming season is the trend of the suit-dresses or the tuxedo dresses brought by Christian Dior. And because the male-female spirit continues to enchant creators, the smoking has not yet said its last word. This trend is formal and sexy at the same time and it will suits to the businesswomen who love to look feminine and trendy at the office without breaking the code.

ORIENTAL TRENDOriental prints and vibes came as a new fresh trend this cold season and they get flawlessly transferred into the spring/ summer 2013 season too. Asian motifs are reflected in Japanese folklore this warm season. Various designers showed numerous options of the popular kimono in their collections during the fashion week. The most beautiful collection of the Japanese style was showcased by Etro. Dresses and tunics were cut in the style of kimono and expensive silk was adorned with oriental patterns. Other designers that used the oriental trend in their collections are Frida Giannini, Fausto Puglisi, Gucci and others.

Etro, Emilio Pucci, Prada

SAFARI TREND: As a fresh update, this trend comes to support the military one, remotely resembling the British colonial army uniforms. The safari trend caught the attention of Emilio Pucci, Kenzo, Max Mara, etc.

Emporio Armani, Kenzo, Max Mara

METALLIC TREND: Last spring designers paid much attention to gold and silver shades and fabrics, and this year they have expanded the range of sparkling colors and shining fabrics by presenting various clothing pieces and accessories in different colors with a metallic sheen. The strict black and gray metallic dresses from Salvatore Ferragamo will appeal to modern business ladies, while those looking for sexy and spectacular pieces can pick a bustier, bodysuits and blouses made of metalized fabrics from Jean Paul Gaultier. DKNY brings lovely silver skirts and jackets, Alberta Ferretti offers long restrained jackets and trousers in light blue hues with a metallic sheen, while Burberry Prorsum has the most complex line of clothes with green, purple, yellow, pink, silver, blue and gold metallic finishes. On the other hand, Versace added high sheen to the gorgeous dresses by using golden fringe details.

Styling & Image Consulting Course: "Seville Revisited"

Seville is a city of joy and happiness, where there's always time to laugh and spend a good time with your friends. It's the land of flamenco, oranges trees and white doves. It's the land of sevillanas, a dance in which women move their bodies to seduce their man with their hands moving like doves' wings. Through the years Seville has been a source of inspiration for famous designers, photographers, artists and musicians. Ralph Lauren used Seville as his inspiration for his Spring/Summer 2013 Collection  with, as André Leon Talley described it,  models walking down the catwalk in "colour and gold washed embellishment on matador jackets, long organza ruffles that float and snake along the floor in weightless perfection".

So when I finished my Styling and Image Consulting Course at Atelier Styling Project and Pedro Crispim proposed a final styling production, I knew that my inspiration would have to be my home town of Seville. I took ideas from several sources. My mum and my sister have always inspired me and I also knew that I wanted to give a twist to the joy and happiness and make it a little bit sad. The whole country is going through a financial crisis so in a way that needed to be reflected. I wanted to show the Andalusian woman, the power of the statement they make when they enter in a room. A tall and sleek figure, with their makeup on no matter what: red lips and blush and sexy eyes to get the attention of their own "matador".

I hope you like the final result.

Many thanks to:
Making off

Tips for successful shopping in the sales.

As if Christmas doesn't leave us frazzled enough, days later we're all back in the scrum for the start of the sale season. Of course, we'd be mad not to, with prices being slashed all over the shops – but the January sales have the potential to make or break us both physically and mentally.Remember a bargain is only a bargain if you wanted it in the first place!
So here are my tips for coming out on top and gaining the sense of smugness that only comes from grabbing a bag full of bargains (and not killing yourself in the process)...

1 – LOVE IT NOW, WEAR IT LATER – if you wouldn’t buy it at full price, don’t buy it just because it’s reduced.  It’s easy to get giddy when you see something reduced by a big margin, but if you don’t love it now, you won’t wear it later!

Ex: €40 spent on some jeans that used to be €120 is still not a bargain if they're destined to live their life at the bottom of your drawer, rather than on your bottom.

2 – PREP IS KEY – do your prep and go through your wardrobe to remind yourself of what you’ve already got to avoid doubling up.  Create a shopping list of items you think you need or are missing to make existing pieces work hard for their place on the hanger.

3 – STAY FOCUSED – take your list with you and keep in mind the idea of what you are looking for, this will save you getting swept along and buying things you don’t need or won’t wear.

4 – SET A BUDGET – set a limit if you feel you need to, that way you will stop before you
get too carried away and will have some left over for when all the lovely new season collections arrive and last season looks feel so out of date.

5 – BE TRUTHFUL – many shops will bring out old items from the back which haven’t sold, so ask yourself is it really you?  Avoid going for something too small which you think you’ll slim into, instead save the money and treat yourself when you have lost those extra centimeters.

6 – NEVER, EVER GO WITH SMALL CHILDREN – Do not, I repeat, DO NOT go sales shopping with children. Well, definitely not small children anyway. They will ruin it for you by: telling you they need a drink/snack/wee at 10 minute intervals (anything to gain your attention again); hiding among racks of clothes, giving you a heart attack when you can't see them; and, if you're not watching closely, accidentally stealing something and setting off the alarms.

7 – HIGHLIGHTS FOR HUSBAND – I don't mean to make sweeping statements here, but certainly among my circle of male friends, sales shopping is right up there with unblocking toilets in the popularity stakes. If the man in your life is similar, and if you really do need his input, then go to the shops very early, do your reccy, and have him come meet you for the edited highlights two hours later. This is a potential marriage saver.

CLICK FROM HOME – If the thought of the sales makes you quake with fear, do the sensible thing and shop from home. Free delivery is also often a double plus. Yes, there is a higher risk of ending up with stuff that doesn't fit, but a potential quick trip to the post office to send returns might well be a risk worth taking if you can't stand the crowds.

– DRESS FOR SOME SERIOUS SHOPPING – If you're braving it and going in for the long haul, kit yourself out – in fact, get your military head on. Wear sensible shoes and a lightweight but warm coat you won't mind putting on and taking off, over and over again, as you go between minus freezing outside temperatures and near tropical department stores. Take snacks and a bottle of water (you don't want a cafe stop to slow you down or diminish your funds).

Ex: Take something to put the loot in. No, a rucksack might not make you very popular among the hoards, but your hands and arms will thank you for it.

10 – PREPARE TO PLAY HIDE AND SEEK – Be wary of the stashers. Think you can't find that divine top in your size? Check the back of the rail, or even the floor, because it's not unknown for wily women to hide what they MIGHT want to come back for later. HA! Busted.

11 –STASH THOSE RECEIPTS – Finally, carefully stash the receipt after each purchase, don't just absent-mindedly chuck it in your handbag because you might well need it later. Some shops don't open fitting rooms during the first few days of the sales, while others might have queues going from lingerie right round to home furnishings, so you'll be tempted to risk it at try clothes on at home
Sale shopping can be lots of fun and there are bargains to be had out there, but it does require strategy, focus and some savvy tactics!

Have this in mind:

INVESTMENT PIECES & CLASSICS: Following my rules above, if you spot a classic piece such as cashmere, leather, great fit of jeans or even a timeless coat then this is where we would advise to invest your sale budget.

PICK UP TRANS-SEASONAL PIECES: Be clever when you shop the sale rails and pick up items which will work for you next season such as animal print or bold coloured pieces for the key ‘colour blocking’ trend heading our way in the Spring 2013.

FASHIONABLE CLASSICS: Military trend have been huge trend this season and provide your wardrobe with some great classics you can work season after season.  Opt for bargains in the form of camel and beige-coloured tailored trousers and shorts; a smart military style jacket for a timeless look when the temperatures rise and bags, belts and heels in tans and browns.

Enjoy the sales!!
